I've been neglecting my blog lately but I had to jump back in to say I was very happy to be selected recently as a "Top Place for Pet Photography in CT" by CBS Connecticut!

I expect another busy summer but I will try to find the time to get back here with some recent work. Don't forget to check me out on Facebook as well!

Irish Setters are some of my favorites!

I spent another great weekend with my Irish Setter friends earlier this month at the Irish Harvest Specialties weekend in Connecticut. Some great people and some beautiful dogs. This is my third consecutive year shooting at the show and it has become one of my favorite events of the year.

National Pet Week is here!

For all of you with "furry family members", this is the week for you! Today kicks off National Pet Week, a great reminder of how pets enhance our lives.
Celebrate by doing something special for your pets...or adopting a pet in need of a home. There are some great sites noted here for other fun things to help celebrate the week.

Something fun for ALL photographers!

Though it has been done before, it is still a great idea. The New York Times is promoting an effort to get as many people as possible to all submit a picture taken at exactly the same time all around the world. The moment they have chosen is Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 15:00 hours Coordinated Universal Time or UTC (if you have never heard of that time measure you aren't the only one! It works out to 11:00AM EST here on the East Coast).

Dog bites Man('s car...and a cop to boot)!

OK, sometimes my dogs misbehave. Actually, that is what they do most of the time...but at least they've never done anything like this! Thankfully, the officer involved didn't panic and shoot the dog (even when a taser didn't stop him) and the dog has now been returned home.

Does make one wonder what the owners are (or aren't!) feeding this little guy...

The Chinese Shar-pei

I got to spend a fun weekend with the folks at the Berkshire Spur Chinese Shar-pei Club for the specialties show in early November. This was my first time working with this breed and it was fun to see them in action!

One Busy Summer!

It seems like forever since I was last able to post something! I've had a steady stream of clients to keep me busy this summer (not that I'm complaining!). Since my last post I've seen a number of things I wanted to comment on including the passing of the world's oldest dog, the passing of the world's tallest dog, and the discovery of the world's first glow-in-the-dark dog! Who knows what will happen if I take another three months off from blogging...

The "Barking BBQ"!

I spent the last weekend in April at Country Dog training center in Southington, CT. Each year the owner, Cheryl, hosts a big dog play event and fair called the "Barking BBQ". I was on hand to take some portraits for interested owners. Normally I'm in a home with one or two dogs, or at a specialty show with the same breed of dog over and over. It is a rare treat for me to get to work with many different dogs throughout the day.
We saw more than 20 different breeds throughout the day!

I had a fun session last month with the Ratti family and their two Goldens, Blaze and Shade. It was obvious that they really loved their dogs.

We did a simple session at their home, some in the yard some inside and tried to capture "a day in the life" of Blaze and Shade. I think we were able to capture all the simple everyday moments. These are the moments that owners often look back on later and say "I wish I had a picture of that!" so it was fun for me to be a part of documenting those memories...

If you've always treated your dog like a little furry person, you aren't alone. Not only that, but as a new study reveals, you were probably right to do so.
A recent article on MSNBC previews a new paper by Jozsef Topal, one of the world's leading canine researchers, which argues that the thousands of years of shared environment between man and dog has made the dog a closer model to human behavior than chimpanzees with whom we share 98% of our genes.
"In my view, pet dogs can be regarded in many aspects as 'pre-verbal infants in canine's clothing'" said Topal. The dogs in his study performed at levels equal to a 16-month old child in a series of tests and the article notes that "dogs exhibit all three primary types of social behavior that humans evolved when they split from chimpanzees 6 million years ago".

Irish Harvest Specialties!

I'm headed back to Vernon, CT for the Irish Harvest Specialties show the first weekend in October. This is the second year for the event which is a combined show for the Irish Setter Club of New England, the Irish Setter Club of Central Connecticut and the Eastern Irish Setter Association.

I had a great time last year and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again this year!
